Free Tumblelog with Tumblr

May 28th, 2007 | Web Design

Tumblr is a new form of short quick blog tool. You can use text, photo, quote, link, chat, or video. The point of it is that it’s just quick and simple. Kinda like Twitter but it’s still more of a blog and you can also add friends and have followers…well, yeah…again kinda like Twitter.

“To make a simple analogy: If blogs are journals, tumblelogs are scrapbooks.”

Anyway, they will basically host it or you can use a custom domain name. You do have to point your A record to “72.32.231.8″. I’m not sure if every host will have this available. If you want to set up a free subdomain to point to tumblr through webdesignstuff.com such as tumblog.webdesignstuff.com or whatever.webdesignstuff.com, then use the contact form and write down the subdomain you wish to use and once it’s set up, you’ll get an email and all you have to do is put it in your tumblr setting like this:

subdomain setting for tumblr

and you’ll be ready to tumble!!!!!!

Wordpress 2.2 Widget it!

May 24th, 2007 | Web Design

The new version of wordpress (2.2) has been out for over a week now and I’ve upgraded one blog with no problem. I will likely upgrade this one soon when I have the time…maybe today…maybe next month, whenever!

This newest version of wordpress has added goodies that includes widgets (see it in action here), full atom support, blogger importer, infinite comment stream, speed optimizations, WYSIWYG support (for future version of Safari - which is great because Safari is my favority browser even though some sites don’t work well on it) AND the best thing is that this new version will protect you from activating any plugin or editing a file that may mess up your blog.

The plugin protection is great since I hate having to reinstall the whole site even though you have backups. 5 minutes of time spent on fixing a messed up blog is 5 minutes of precious time wasted.

If you’ve checked out the way the widget works from n.design and actually like to use it, you can stop by the wp-themes section and download it!

Social Bookmarking for Wordpress

May 22nd, 2007 | Web Design

There are lots of social bookmarking site out there and the more you allow your users to add your post to one of them, the more chances of receiving more audience. If you run a wordpress blog, having the ability for users to add your post to one of their social bookmarking sites with just a click will be very useful.

Sociable is a plugin for Wordpress from Peter Harkins of push.cx. It has a big list of built in social bookmark site (including digg, reddit, del.icio.us, furl and lots more) and all you have to do is put it in your plugin folder, activate it, then select the social bookmark sites you want to display. It’s as easy as that.

BTW - I also like his tagline “A tea-drinking web geek’s coffee-flavored blog” for his site!

Start Voting!

May 7th, 2007 | Web Design

I’m not sure if people vote more online for thing or if they vote more for politics. I like voting online stuff because they make it more easy. You have to wait in a long line to vote for the president and plus, sometimes your vote really just doesn’t count =P. Anyway just wanted to remind all that the voting for MAY 1ST REBOOT has started today and will last for one week. So pick out your best site and hope the best website redesign wins!

I’ve selected a few of my favorites and maybe will add more if I have the time, but I put them under Best Design Showcase section of the site. My favorite of the best are Thibaud. It’s such a simple site, but very creative and fun to look at! I believe he was the winner of last years reboot, so I wonder if he can win again this year. Yes, I’m too lazy to read all the rules for the reboot. Anyway, go vote!

Widget IT!

May 7th, 2007 | Web Design

I’ve just tested the Del.icio.us widget out from yourminis.com. It’s pretty cool and of course that’s not the only widget available. There are widgets for blog like techcrunch or searchable widgets for things like Craigslist and eBay. Anyway it’s just fun looking around for different widgets. I even had fun just changing colors, fonts size and window sizes for the widget. Yeah, it doesn’t take too much to amuse me! =)
